Walker Tower in demand by celebs

If your home life is blighted by a noisy neighbour, then you’ll no doubt appreciate the Walker Tower apartments.

With walls that are 18-inches thick and floors so solid they can bear 45 kg per square foot, those pesky neighbours could throw as many late night parties as they want and you wouldn’t even hear a peep.

Walker Tower was built in 1929 in Manhattan as a call centre for the New York Telephone Company, but property groups JDS Development and Property Markets Group recently transformed it into 50 luxury flats.

The extremely private and exclusive homes have drawn the attention of numerous celebrities, with Cameron Diaz, Ryan Seacrest and Blake Lively all reportedly interested in buying.

As you might expect when celebs are sniffing around, the properties don’t come cheap. One unidentified buyer purchased two penthouses for $34 million (£21m), while the priciest penthouse in the building is on the market for $55 million (£34m).

Remarkably, that’s more than JDS Development purchased the entire building for back in 2007. And while they have reportedly pumped $200 million into developing it, we can safely assume they’ve made a healthy return on their investment.

If you are interested in buying, their press office tells us the cheapest flats are available from just £4 million…

What do you get for your money

According to the brochure, the 24-storey Walker Towers was built before neighbourhood height limits were enacted, meaning it “rises above all surrounding buildings and offers stunning and protected 360-degree Manhattan views.”

Inside, the 14-foot-high ceilings and massive rooms – master bedrooms are the same size as a standard one-bed flat – mean you’re unlikely to feel claustrophobic at any stage. More than half the residences come with private outdoor space.

The home automation system means heating, lighting and security can all be controlled from a tablet, which is a nice finishing touch.
