The tallest building in Brooklyn begins its rise to the top

Construction on 9 Dekalb, the tallest tower in Brooklyn, is about to begin. Reaching 1,066 feet, this development will throw Brooklyn into the conversation around super-tall buildings. The tower will yield 417 rental apartments, 20 percent of which will be priced below-market rate. JP Morgan Chase sold the landmarked Dime bank building, located on the site of the tower, to JDS Development Group and Chetrit Group for $90 million. The developers also bought the other property on the site, 340 Flatbush Ave. Extension, for $43 million.

Top New York City real estate developer JDS Development Group is adding height and style to Brooklyn’s skyline with the construction of its recently announced tower at 9 Dekalb Avenue. The 1,066-foot tall property, designed by SHoP Architects, functions as a visual extension of the hundred-year-old, landmarked Dime Savings Bank, which will be incorporated into its structure. The 73-story tower will house about 500 residential units, as well as a to-be-announced retailer in the renovated bank building.

New York City real estate developer JDS Development has secured approval from the Landmarks Preservation Commission to build a 1066-foot tower in Downtown Brooklyn. The Brooklyn skyline is about to get a stunning new addition in the form of 9 DeKalb, the first tower approved for construction in the borough. Top NYC real estate developer JDS Development Group recently received unanimous approval from the city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission to build the 1,066-foot tower, which takes design cues from the historic 1908 Dime Savings Bank of Brooklyn building, upon which the new structure will be partially constructed. After the commission’s vote, landmarks commissioner Frederick Bland called the project “enlightened urbanism at its best.”

Top New York City real estate developer JDS Development Group has submitted plans for a 1,066-foot tower in downtown Brooklyn. The 73-story luxury high-rise on DeKalb Avenue would be the tallest in the borough. The building’s plans, which were created by SHoP Architects, draw on features of the adjacent Brooklyn Dime Savings Bank such as its bronze exterior details and hexagonal footprint­­­­­­­. Hazer Ali of the Brooklyn Community Board 2 land use committee, which has unanimously approved the project, calls it “a great opportunity to save the [Dime Savings Bank],” a historic property. Known as 9 DeKalb, the new tower will house almost 500 luxury residences. Michael Stern, founder and managing partner of JDS, states, “We want this project to encapsulate everything that is great about Brooklyn’s past and everything that is great about Brooklyn’s future.”
